Influence at Any Age, Chapter 3

Influence at Any Age

Many people picture a creator as a 22-year-old dancing in a bedroom. The data suggests a wider picture. This chapter shows who creators actually are, what each stage of life offers, and how to decide between part-time and full-time.

Who creators actually are

Careful sources disagree about numbers because “creator” is hard to define. Here is what can be said with confidence:

Adobe’s Future of Creativity study (2022) surveyed people in nine countries and reported that more than 165 million people had begun to see themselves as creators since 2020, including about 34 million in the United States. It found that millennials, not teenagers, were the largest group of creators, at 42 percent of the creator economy, while Gen Z was 14 percent.

What you can take from this: you are not late, and you are not unusual.

The three economies: speed, authority and trust

Ages 18 to 29: Speed and entertainment. What wins: fast trends, challenges, comedy, dance, reactions, music clips, relatable humour. Speed matters because short-video platforms reward videos that people finish and replay.

Ages 30 to 49: Authority and practical help. What wins: do-it-yourself and home projects, personal finance, parenting, careers, real estate, health and fitness basics, tradecraft. Authority produces videos people search for.

Ages 50 to 80: Trust, craft and lifestyle. What wins: gardening, cooking, handcrafts, repair, history, caregiving, travel after retirement, style, wellness and any skill that takes patience. A calm, clear voice is an asset. Viewers often choose these videos because they can follow along.

That’s the start. The rest is in the book.

The illustrations were made with AI image tools and then chosen, captioned and arranged by Paul Kendall. They are decorative or conceptual. The people shown are not real, and plans and diagrams are examples, not construction documents.

Paul 'PK' Kendall

Paul has spent his working life explaining things to a room: first as a newspaper writer, then from behind the decks, and later in pitch meetings and on the web.

Paul is an independent entrepreneur based in Guelph, Ontario, and a Canadian and American citizen. He spent a decade in the newspaper industry before moving into screenwriting, TV format development and building apps. He has been a professional DJ in Southern Ontario since 1989, and he records music as Derk Swade on his own label, Phillistine Records.

Every book on this shelf comes from one of those lives. Newsrooms taught him to say it plainly. The DJ booth taught him to read the room. Pitching taught him to open strong. Housing and real estate gave him a subject people actually worry about.

The newsroom

A decade in newspapers means short sentences, one idea at a time, and a habit of asking where a number came from.

Shows up in: the Sources & Method chapters, and the rule in Influence at Any Age that a statistic with no source does not get used.

The DJ booth

Paul has worked campus bars and nightclubs, and ran a DJ service for more than a decade. A good DJ doesn't follow a script. They read the crowd and change course.

Shows up in: the "reads the room" picture that explains how AI guesses, in AI Explained.

The writers' room

Years of screenwriting and TV format development are training in structure: a promise at the top, a payoff at the end, and no wasted scenes between them.

Shows up in: chapters that all follow the same plan, so you always know where you are.

Real estate and the backyard

Paul worked in real-estate marketing with Keller Williams and Coldwell Banker in Studio City, California, then spent about five years in the housing sector, including the ADU industry in Guelph.

Shows up in: The Complete Canadian ADU Handbook.

The studio

As Derk Swade, Paul has released the album Rulebreaker and several singles, distributed through DistroKid to 24 platforms.

Shows up in: the Listen section, and in the creator chapters on sound, where trust is won or lost.

The workshop

Paul builds and runs a portfolio of more than 25 web properties, from music sites to Dating Scam Detector, a checker for romance scams.

Shows up in: the scam-safety habits in The True Cost of Dating Apps and the “Watch out for this” box that closes every chapter of AI Explained.

Pitched to the people who decide

Paul has pitched projects directly to:

  • Chuck Lorre
  • Jamie Foxx
  • Fox TV
  • Disney Digital
  • Techstars
  • An Emmy-winning producer of The Simpsons, who is also a former Nickelodeon vice-president
